Geotextiles are permeable fabrics which we use in road industry and civil engineers projects for:

- filtration ( allowing only passage o water while preventing soil of escaping through )

- seperation ( fabric is laid between different materials )

- protection

They are mostly produced from polyester or polypropylene fibers.

The two main types are:

- woven, which are made from interlaced yarn

- non woven, which are mostly made of needle punched fibers

Polypropylene fibers - aka synthetic fibers - are used in cement mixes mainly to control early cracking from plastic shrinkage.

This is more valid for the so called

- micro-synthetic fibers or

- monofilament fibers

which are the biggest market for the  polypropylene / synthetic fibers for concrete. 

They give a smooth finish due to their small size and thus they are used for stamped,architectural or decorative concrete.


Advantages

- they increase the durability of the concrete

- they increase shatter resistance and abrasion resistance

- reduced bleeding and freeze / thaw damage

Usual dosage: 0,6-0,9kg/m3 of concrete


There are also fibrillated fibers which deliver max post peak flexural strength and they are preferably used for screeds and especially for floor heating projects.

Usual dosage: 1kg/m3 of concrete


And of course there are also the structural or macro-synthetic polypropylene / synthetic fibers which are thicker and bigger and can compete with metallic / steel fibers and traditional  steel wire mesh and rebar. They are used mainly for slabs-on-ground and composite metal decks.

Usual dosage: 2kg/m3 of concrete
