SBS  modified asphalt membranes are more elastic than their APP counterparts and don't become as brittle in lower temoperatures.

They are also more expensive

On the other hand APP modified asphalt membranes are more resistant to UV and higher temperatures.

Generally there are no strict rules to define where each type should be used.

Though, the collective experience and the common logic suggest that APP should be used in hotter countries with more sun radiation.

And SBS should be used in colder climates.

It's crazy!

An option of a quality APP with a cold temperature flexibility of -10 degrees might be the best for Greece.

But why we use so much SBS in Greece?

The answer is that we simply lack knowledge and we act like nouveau riche.

SBS and APP modified asphalt membranes are maybe the best value solution for flat roof waterproofing.

More reliable than liquid waterproofing, less expensive and complicated than single ply membrane waterproofing.


SBS membranes are more flexible than APP and thus more suitable for bigger roofs and places with low temperatures.

APP membranes of good quality are maybe preferable for the warm climates of Greece and Cyprus.


Things to take into consideration with bituminous / asphalt membranes:

- weight / m2

-  cold flexibility

- reinforcement / mechanical characteristics

- exposed surface.

Heavier and more elastic bituminous membranes are more dependable. 

Also a spunbond polyester reinforcement is better than a short fiber one.

Aluminium faced asphalt membranes are better suited for upstands and detailing.

SBS membranes are more elastic and thus more suitable for bigger roofs. They also exhibit  a better behaviour at lower temperatures.

Things to check in asphalt membranes:

- weight / m2

- asphalt mass cold flexibility

- type and weight of reinforcement

- type of self-protection layer

Heavier and more elastic asphalt membranes are obviously more reliable. 

Also, a heavy, spunbond polyester reinforcement is better than a fiberglass reinforcement with minimal mechanical resistance and elongation characteristics.

Aluminium faced asphalt membranes are better suited for upstands and detailing.

You are not going to find better prices if you are from Cyprus, Greece and the Balkan region.
