What are geotextiles?
They are water permeable fabrics made from weavable fibers - usually from polypropylene or polyester - which are used for soil stabilization, erosion control, drainage etc. They belong to geosynthetics.
Non woven geotextiles
They resemble felts and provide planar flow. They are perfect for filtration, that's why they are usually called filter fabrics.
Woven geotextiles
They come from fibers woven together and possess high load capacity and tensile strength. They are good for reinforcement and stabilization but they poor for filtering.
Main functions of geotextiles
Filtration
Geotextiles let the water pass and retain the fine soil particles, keeping thus the french drains fully permeable
Seperation
They prevent two different layers to intermix, keeping thus untouched the integrity of the substrates
Protection
They provide mechanical protection to geomembranes. They can also be used for the protection of road embankments from erosion.
Reinforcement
Heavy woven geotextiles with their high tensile strength are used to reinforce earth structures.
Drainage
Thick non wovens permit water to circulate in their plane.
